District to celebrate Hispanic heritage

By Victor Henderson/reporter

Students on all TCC campuses are encouraged to “embrace success” by attending the fourth annual Abrazando al Exito on South Campus Oct. 9.

Claudia Garcia, South’s college access coordinator, is headlining the event. During last spring’s TCC commencement, Garcia shared her story with 1,900 graduates and their families.

At the age of 21, Garcia was diagnosed with cancer but maintained a positive attitude throughout her treatment.  She is continuing her education with the goal of becoming the first member in her family to graduate from a university.

As a TCC alumna, she hopes that her journey will motivate students to reach for their dreams in higher education.

Abrazando al Exito was created to celebrate, promote and encourage personal and educational success within the Hispanic community. The event will feature food, art and musical performances.

The winner of an essay contest will receive two semesters of tuition. The scholarship recipient will be notified Oct. 7 and will be expected to attend Abrazando al Exito.

This free event is scheduled 3-6 p.m. in the SSTU Cafeteria on South Campus. All are welcome, and transportation is available on all TCC campuses for this event. Students can register at www.surveymonkey.com/s/Abrazando2013.
