A NE guest artist will perform on the pipa, one of the most popular Chinese musical instruments that has been played for more than 2,000 years.
Mei Yuxin will present a guest concert at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 12 in College Hall (NCAB 1111) on NE Campus.
The pipa is a four-stringed Chinese musical instrument with a wooden pear-shaped body. Tones from the instrument have a quality sound with a complex performance technique.
Pipa music is usually put in two different categories: traditional and contemporary. This form of music is also considered “the soul of Chinese music” and a symbol of Chinese culture.
During the concert, she will play “Swan,” which portrays the various dynamic movements of swans. Other pieces include “Aged Child,” “Beautiful Lake and Autumn Moon,” “White Snow in a Sunny Spring” and “Ambush from All Sides,” which is the military repertoire of pipa music.
Yuxin has played the pipa for 26 years. A current graduate student of ethnomusicology at the University of North Texas, she has bachelor’s and master’s degrees in pipa performance as well as education from China’s Conservatory of Music.
Yuxin’s career as a professional musician began as a soloist with the Chinese Music Chamber Orchestra in 1997.
Since then, she has performed around the world including Hong Kong, Portugal and France.
