NW Campus students do not need to visit 221B Baker Street in London to meet Sherlock Holmes and Dr. John Watson, Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s fictional characters.
The student activities department, in collaboration with the English department, has arranged for Holmes and Watson “look-alikes” from the Sherlock Holmes Museum in London to present Examining a Mystery:
A Visit with Dr. John Watson and Sherlock Holmes.
Doyle experts attest that he based Watson on himself and that his professor, Dr. Joseph Bell, inspired the Holmes’ character.
The presenters will examine the structure and the purpose of the mystery novels in an interactive presentation. The focus of the discourse will be Doyle’s short story “The Speckled Band.” The story can be found at www.sherlock-holmes.co.uk/home.htm by scrolling down the library menu to the index of stories.
Doyle, a physician, gave birth to Holmes in his first novel, A Study in Scarlet. A popular success, it created a demand for more stories with the characters. In all, Doyle wrote four novels and 56 short stories based on Holmes and Watson. The short stories were published in several series in The Strand Magazine.
Holmes and Watson will appear on NW Campus in WSTU 1303-05 Tuesday, Feb. 6, from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m.
