Students to learn by service

Students seeking a career in the service industry need to look no further than the Main Commons.

SE Campus career and employment service is hosting a free Service Learning Agency Fair in the Main Commons, today 9 a.m.-2 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 8, 11 a.m.-3 p.m.

The event will include representatives from area schools, food banks, churches and various non-profit and service-related organizations.

Gina Maloy, assistant coordinator, said participants would have the opportunity to see what needs exist in their communities and what they can do to help.

“ We expect to have eight organizations on the first day and nine on the second,” she said.

Students wishing to attend the fair are required to register, complete an application and complete service learning orientation.

Students who have not registered can still participate in the fair, but the information must be completed prior to participation in any activity.

Service Learning offers students a valuable hands-on, real-world experience, Maloy said.

The opportunities can be tailored to fit the student’s schedule, instructor requirements and community needs.

Maloy said the event’s success is a credit not only to the various agencies, but also largely because of students’ willingness to participate in the program.

“ Some students do it for class and then end up extending their hours,” she said. “Some students do it just to do it.”
