Ten TCC students will experience democracy in action with a rare opportunity to meet with state legislators at the Capitol.
The students have been chosen from each of the campuses to travel to Austin for Community College Day Feb. 22.
Selection criteria differed from each campus, but each of the students are student leaders or members of Phi Theta Kappa.
In Austin the students will be divided into teams that will visit the offices of Tarrant County’s 10 representatives and three senators. Ideally, each student will have the opportunity to meet with his or her representative, Dr. Bill Lace, executive assistant to the chancellor, said in an e-mail.
Students are expected to not only voice their concerns but provide legislators with valuable first-hand information pertaining to higher education issues.
Lobbyist Beamon Floyd will be on hand to explain the lawmaking process and offer advice on how to speak effectively with members of congress.
“ This trip is an excellent way for our students to meet legislators and voice their opinions,” Dr. Tahita Fulkerson, associate vice chancellor of learning, said.
“ Our state representatives really do want to hear what young voters have to say.”
Lace and other TCC administrators will accompany the students on the trip. Those scheduled include Dr. Van Parker, NE Campus vice president for student development services; Dr. Paula Vastine, NE director of student development services; Vesta Wheatley, NW director of student activities; Doug Peak, SE director of student development services, and Zeb Strong, South director of student activities.
The trip is organized by the Texas Association of Community College and the Texas Junior College Student Government Association.
Community College Day is an annual statewide event that TCC has participated in only recently. Organizers of the trip anticipate a large turnout.
