Seminar to offer suggestions for aid

Students interested in extra money for school, but unclear on the process of choosing and applying for college scholarships, can attend Free Money—Applying for Scholarships next week.

Part of the Student Success Seminars, it will be presented by Sandra Johnson, counselor, and Altheria Gaston, English instructor at 12:30 p.m. Tuesday, Feb. 27, on South Campus in the SSTU Texas Room.

Many scholarships, grants, loans and work-study programs are offered exclusively to TCC students.

Johnson will provide students with help in matching their needs to the money that is available and figuring out which scholarships best suit individual needs based on their career choices.

Gaston will teach students how to write an essay appropriate to the scholarship they desire.

Annie Dobbins, the event’s coordinator, said 95 percent of all scholarships require an essay.

Dobbins said Gaston’s intention is to advise students how to write an essay to successfully achieve the scholarship of their choice.

Many sources of college money are available, and this seminar is for those students who have trouble choosing one that is appropriate to their need, Dobbins said.

Free Money promises to be a helpful and instructive seminar for those who could use a little financial boost, she said.

Many students have to go to work to pay for school from their own pocket, Johnson said.

“ Work is honorable,” she said. “But there are many individuals who are looking for the free money and are doing quite well.”
