South Campus is offering students the chance to throw out old ideas about order and formation next week.
Ephrat Asherie of New York will bring The Hip Hop Residency to the Gym 6-7 p.m. Thursday, Feb 7.
Guest host of The Hip Hop Residency and current member of the all-female break dancing crew, Fox Force Five, Asherie will introduce her specialty of street dance forms such as b-girling (break dancing), hip hop and house to Fort Worth.
Gypsy Ingram, South Campus dance instructor, said the evening will be a chance for people to “get excited about dance, and maybe [this] will encourage them to find dance in their life.”
Ingram said the event is not for dancers only and encourages everyone to come enjoy a night of entertainment.
The free community event is expected to bring the dancer out in anyone who attends, Ingram said.
Ingram said she hopes the event will encourage students to dance, whether it by taking a dance class at TCC or connecting with the clubs in the DFW area.
Although held on South Campus, the event is open to everyone, including those outside of TCC.
Ingram said the event would be great for a large audience, so she wants students to bring all their friends.
Asherie will also have exclusive visits with students enrolled in the South Campus hip hop classes—and with Velocity, South’s resident dance company.
The visits will be Wednesday, Feb. 6, at 12:30 p.m. and Thursday, Feb. 7, at 11 a.m.
Ingram said whether attendees experience Asherie during the day in class or during the evening session, they should not expect to come, sit down and watch. Instead, they should expect the unexpected, to stand up and dance.
Asherie is also the cofounder of Dance for Peace: One Step at a Time, a non-profit organization that reaches out internationally to the underprivileged through urban dance.
The group’s aim is for people to enhance their self-esteem and embrace each other’s creativity.
