Now-Feb. 24 SE Campus’ literary publication, The Compass, is accepting submissions for the magazine. Categories include poetry, short stories, plays, essays, cartoons, drawings, paintings, photography, music, 3-D and performance/multimedia presentations. Now-Feb. 29 TR Campus Library is sponsoring its fourth annual book drive. Students, faculty and staff can take new or gently used books to the library (TREF 2302). Children’s books will go to I.M. Terrell Elementary in Fort Worth, and all other books will go to the Friends of Fort Worth Public Library store.

Now-Feb. 29 The current issue of Student Health 101, an online magazine available to TCC students at http://readsh101.com/tccd.html, has articles on improving life through better sleep, creating effective résumés, pulling up falling grades and finding the perfect fitness and health apps for electronic devices. Students can also register to have the magazine sent to an email account. The site also includes fitness and cooking videos.

Now-April 15 SE and South campuses will offer free income tax preparation to those with annual incomes under $50,000 through the Volunteer Income Assistance program. Hours are 4-8 p.m. Tuesday and Thursday, 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Wednesday, 3-7 p.m. Friday and 9 a.m.-1 p.m. Saturday. Feb. 15 Bank Day will be held 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in the Main Commons on SE Campus. Representatives from area banks will be available to answer questions about checking and savings accounts.

Feb. 15 Health services will offer free HIV/AIDS testing 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in ESEC 2118 on SE Campus.

Feb. 15 Transfer Tips 101 will be held 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the SSTU Texas Room on South Campus. Representatives from universities will discuss the importance of obtaining a degree guide to help avoid problems when transferring to a four-year college.

Feb. 15 The second of four seminars on Diabetes Empowerment Education Program will be presented by Toya Norton from John Peter Smith Hospital and the Community Diabetes Project 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the SSTU Forum Room on South Campus. Each session covers a different aspect of diabetes. Participants can attend any or all sessions. Students can bring a lunch. Drinks and healthy snacks will be provided. Feb. 15 Cal Newport, author of How to Win at College, will present via webcast How to Be a 4.0 Student 1-3 p.m. in the North Ballroom on SE Campus and in NCAB College Hall on NE. Phi Theta Kappa will sponsor the event.

Feb. 15-16 TR Campus will host the Spring 2012 service fair 10 a.m.–1 p.m. in the Idea Store. Local nonprofits, K-12 schools and government offices will promote volunteer opportunities for students, faculty and the community. For more information, contact Laura Escamilla at 817-515-1194.

Feb. 16 Pre-Professional Transfer Planning will be held 11 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the SSTU Texas Room on South Campus. Students will receive overviews on applying, choosing a bachelor’s degree and gaining experience. A panel of university representatives will lead the discussion.

Feb. 16 Barbershop Confession will be held 11:30 a.m.-12:30 p.m. in the SSTU Texas Room on South Campus. This event will target the relationship between the college and community, especially in relation to men. The panel will discuss existing barriers and the need for improvement and will answer questions regarding such issues.

Feb. 17 University of Texas at Arlington professor Allan Saxe will present “Leadership and Society” as the keynote speaker for the 14th Leadership eXperience Summit 1-3:30 p.m. in Action A (TRTR 4202) on TR Campus. A panel discussion with TCC faculty and staff will follow his presentation. Interested students can register at www.volunteerhub.com.

Feb. 17-18 The TR Campus library will offer free Information Literacy classes 1-4 p.m. Feb. 17 and 9 a.m.-noon Feb. 18 in the Library Classroom (TREF 1302). This three-hour non-credit course is designed to help students find credible online resources and reference materials. The course is taught by professional librarians, and students will receive a certificate of completion after taking the class.

Feb. 18 NE health services will offer free confidential HIV and syphilis testing 10 a.m.-2 p.m. in NSTU 1704A (health services). Walk-ins are welcome, but appointments are encouraged. Results will be available Feb. 25. For more information, call 817-515-6056.

Feb. 20 A Presidents Day celebration will be held on NW Campus 10 a.m.-noon in the WTLO lobby. This free event will feature educational information, crafts and games related to the presidents of the United States. For more information, contact student activities at 817-515-7795.

Feb. 20 Love Your Heart, hosted by NW health services, will be 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the Michael Saenz Conference Center (WACB 1123). Sherree Bennett of the American Heart Association will discuss how nutrition and exercise help keep the heart healthy. A healthy lunch will be provided. Feb. 20 Social Media Footprints will be held 12:30-1:30 p.m. in the SSTU Texas Room on South Campus. Students can learn ways to avoid becoming a negative statistic from the footprints they leave in this digital age and the roles the Federal Trade Commission plays in the privacy of social media sites.

Feb. 20 SE Campus will hold a ribbon cutting for its Veterans’ Wall of Honor at 1 p.m. in the North Ballroom, honoring SE students, faculty and staff. State Sen. Wendy Davis, a former TCC student, will be the keynote speaker.

Feb. 20 A Zumba class will be presented by Gracie Martinez, John Peter Smith Hospital fitness instructor, 5-6 p.m. in the SHPE Gym on South Campus. No reservations are required, but participants should attend already dressed to exercise.

Feb. 20-24 A U.S. presidents exhibit will be on display 8 a.m.-5 p.m. in the SE Campus library in honor of Presidents Day.

Feb. 21 In celebration of Mardi Gras, SE Campus will have Beads in the Bistro 11 a.m.-noon in the ESCT Bistro. Music, masks, food and information will be provided.

Feb. 21 Easy Research, a lunchtime workshop series presented by TR Campus assistant director of library services Danielle Ellis, will teach participants the concepts and skills needed to conduct online research. The workshop is noon-1 p.m. in the Discover Center for Student Success (TRTR 3102).

Feb. 22 SE Campus counseling center will sponsor a health and wellness workshop Stress Management 9:35-10:30 a.m. in the North Ballroom. Melissa Evans, HPE associate professor, will speak, and light refreshments will be served.

Feb. 23 TR health services presents Veterans Support Day 10 a.m.-2 p.m. on TRTR Main Street. Veteran support services will be available so veterans and their families can learn about the resources to make their lives less stressful. Feb. 23 SE Campus will have a Writing Research Essays workshop at 11 a.m. in the writing center classroom ESEE 2227A.

Feb. 24 NE reading assistant professor Rita Wisdom will present Gift-Box Writing: The Personal Essay as part of the Rhetoric for the Rest of Us series 11:30 a.m.-12:10 p.m. in NACB 1114. The series, sponsored by the English department, teaches students how rhetoric can be used out of the classroom and in everyday writing. Refreshments will be provided.

Feb. 27 NW English instructor Andrea Dunford and the NW librarians will host a Marine Creek Book Club meeting 1:15-2:15 p.m. in the library on the third floor of the WTLO building. This month’s book is The Book of Lost Things, a fantasy thriller by John Connolly about a boy grieving the loss of his mother and taking solace in the books on his shelf. Copies of the book are available for checkout at the library circulation desk. Students, faculty and staff can participate.

Feb. 28 HIV results from Feb. 21 testing will be available 10 a.m.-noon in SACC 1331 on South Campus.

March 2 TCC students are invited to participate in the Jim Bolen Math Competition at 2 p.m. The competition will be held in NTAB 2203C on NE Campus. Cash prizes and scholarships to four-year colleges and universities are available to top-scoring students. No reservation or application is necessary.
