A college fair for historically black colleges and universities (HBCUs) will be held Feb. 27 on SE Campus.
The fair is sponsored by the Men of Color Mentoring program and the SE transfer center.
“We want to make it unique for students to just discover other universities that are connected to African-American heritage,” SE academic advisor Terrell Shaw said.
Shaw anticipates about 16 schools will participate including Paul Quinn College, Prairie View A&M, Huston-Tillotson University and Florida A&M University.
All students can attend. Shaw stressed that, though the name “historically black” might make one presume it is all-black, HBCUs are diverse.
“Historically black colleges and universities are institutions that cultivate all races and cultures,” he said.
Shaw said his experience attending an HBCU helped him develop leadership qualities. Shaw was an orientation leader and a student recruiter. He also got to travel with the campus president and was involved with campus ministry and student choir, all activities he said HBCUs highly encourage.
“I don’t think I would have gotten that at a non-HBCU,” he said.
