Diagnosed with leukemia at 16 years old, Alice decides to get back at anyone who has done her wrong.
This is the premise of a new book by South Campus library specialist Julie Murphy, who will sign copies and answer questions at 2 p.m. March 19 in the Jenkins Garrett Library.
“I’ve always loved to write,” Murphy said.
Her novel, Side Effects May Vary, follows Alice, who after receiving her diagnosis, becomes enthralled by completing her revenge-filled bucket list while simultaneously doing good deeds.
“Alice is definitely a little prickly, and I like that about her,” Murphy said. “I will say the chip on her shoulder is pretty epic.”
Harvey, a friend of Alice’s, who has feelings deeper than friendship for her, helps her complete her bucket list.
Soon after she finishes the tasks she set out to do before her time is up, Alice learns her cancer has gone into remission. Alice then finds herself having to face the damage she has caused to those around her.
The book signing will include a brief presentation, Murphy said.
“I will probably talk a bit about how I was published, do some audience questions and then sign books,” she said.
The book will be released March 18, and the South bookstore has ordered several copies for purchase.
“We’re hoping to have those available to be checked out from the library a few days prior to the event,” said public service librarian Pamela Pfeiffer.
