The warm weather created the perfect setting for soccer on NE Campus April 2 and 4.
Although the turnout was too low for a tournament, the players who did show up spent two hours each day playing 6-on-6 pick-up games.
NE student Alexis Melendez said soccer is a perfect way to unwind after the stress of classes.
“[Soccer] encourages you to think because it’s so fast-paced,” Melendez said. “It’s also nice to get your mind off of studying.”
Raymond Watanga focuses most of his time on basketball but still likes to participate in his first love, soccer.
“I love the teamwork and fancy footwork,” he said. “I also love the camaraderie out on the field.”
The April 2 games were cut short due to an injury on the field.
“One of the players twisted their ankle pretty bad,” said Aamer Qureshi. “After we got her off the field, the game broke up.”
Although the first day of games ended abruptly, most of the players returned April 4.
“We had a pretty good group of people show up,” NE student Luis Suarez said.
Suarez organized the games on both days and said he hopes soccer will continue to expand on NE.
“It’s a really popular sport,” Suarez said. “I think we can get some more people out here.”
