Election season is in full swing on SE Campus as students run for various positions in the Student Government Association.
Current SGA president Fahd Aziz is on the ballot again but has dropped out of the race due to the fact that he will no longer be a TCC student next fall.
“I decided that I will not be coming back to TCC in the fall,” he said in an email April 28.
“It would be unconstitutional for me to seek another term if I will not be a student at TCC for a year, hence the reason behind my decision to withdraw from the election cycle.”
This makes Aziz’s only opponent, Joan Ukhuakhua, the presumed winner for the presidential race unless voters write in a different person for the position.
Ukhuakhua currently serves as the association’s parliamentarian.
Besides echoing Aziz’s desire to expand food options, Ukhuakhua also wants to increase student awareness of the resources available for them on campus.
“There’s different clubs. Some come with scholarships,” she said. “We have different resources here that could help them, and most students don’t know it.”
Running for vice president are Lea Anne Almetwaly and Samal Al-Hamadi.
Via direct communication, Almetwaly intends to “better the school and really listen to what the students need and want.”
Almetwaly said she was not aware of an election being held by SGA until she received an email announcing the upcoming election.
“It made me realize that SGA should make more noise on campus,” she said.
According to the SE SGA website, Al-Hamadi has experience as a peer leader on SE Campus.
“I would like to see TCC improve in many different ways,” she said in a statement on the website. “The campus often feels like a high school, and I believe students are not treated as fairly as they deserve to be treated.”
More information on the candidates is available on the SGA website, and a link has been emailed to the student body.
The ballots have also been emailed to students.
The deadline to vote is 5 p.m. May 1, and the winning candidates will be announced either May 2 or 5.
