CD Review-Brand New-The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me

By Sara Pintilie/entertainment editor

Brand New’s The Devil and God Are Raging Inside Me has a beautifully haunting sound definitely worth checking out.

The quartet has finally come into its own after 2001’s Your Favorite Weapon and 2003’s Deja Entendu, and this CD is the pleasing result.

Everything Brand New did before seems insufficient compared against this album.

The sound is full of melancholy but with a bite of hard-indie rock.

The band balances the two fantastically, so it never becomes depressing or shallow.

The album immensely reminds me of Radiohead’s OK Computer, down to the anguish and stunning beauty in the sound and lyrics.

The album also has a hint of old-school Modest Mouse before Good News for People Who Love Bad News.

The lyrics have subtle depth, such as “Limousine,” a song about the death of 7-year-old Katie Flynn.

A good chunk of the lyrics deals with religion. It never comes off preachy though.

Singer Jesse Lacey seems to have more of a confused frustration with the topic than anything else.

The first track, “Sowing Season,” talks about turning someone’s life around and is probably the best track off the whole album.

The tracks flow together nicely throughout the album.

And listeners can lose themselves in Lacey’s voice and dark melodies.

Noteworthy Tracks: “Sowing Season,” “Jesus,” “Deguasser”
