SE aims for success in week of seminars

Students who want to succeed in college can find assistance during SE Campus’ Learning Skills Week Sept. 8-11.

For four days, the college will offer 20 sessions covering topics such as dropping classes, choosing the right major and managing anger.
District institutional diversity officer Shani Barrax-Moore along with SE’s diversity and inclusion council co-chairs Rhonda Hudson, Garrison Henderson and Vivian Lu will present Free to Be Me at TCC.

“We’re going to talk about language that shapes an inclusive environment,” Barrax-Moore said.

She mentioned that a 2012 survey completed by students and faculty on SE Campus, similar to surveys done around other campuses, revealed that offensive language was the biggest problem on the campus.

Students and faculty alike cited offensive language pertaining to sexual orientation, religious denomination and gender.

“We’ll also discuss the impact offensive language has on student success,” she said. “If you can’t bring your full self, you’ll leave a big part of you at home.”

To kick off the whole conference, SE success counselor Bayanne Elkhatib will present Discover the Pathway to Your Dreams.

“This is to help students figure out what career they’d want to lead and what TCC major is offered to help them achieve that dream,” she said.
“I hope students figure out that there are many people here for their best interest.”

Both of these presentations will be given Sept. 8.

TCC media assistant Dominique Spencer will round out the four-day event with Mellow My Man: Channeling Anger Within.
“This will be about how to deal with anger,” he said.

Building on his own personal experience and passion on the subject, Spencer said he will help students learn to tackle their own anger by using three techniques.

“Don’t let things get to you,” he said about the session Sept. 11. “If it rains, get out an umbrella.”

All sessions will be held in the North Ballroom.
