South Campus students who participated in the Healthy Meal Plan class said they learned more about nutrition and its impact on their lives, thanks to the four-week program aimed at improving students’ eating habits.
Laura De Hoyos, program assistant for the JPS Smart Steps Program, presented the classes. De Hoyos said she prides herself in educating people to live healthy lifestyles by eating right and exercising.
The four-week regimen emphasized the need for students to monitor their calorie intake, avoid fatty and fried foods when possible, include more fruit and vegetables in their diet and try to incorporate physical activities into their routine.
“This program was very helpful to me,” South student Denise Isom said. “We all need to be more educated on nutrition.”
After participating in the classes, Isom said she plans to improve her eating habits by keeping track of the nutritional value and the portions of her meals.
De Hoyos said students shouldn’t get discouraged.
“If you fall off the wagon, just get back on,” she said. “Know what you’re eating. Knowledge is power.”
The event was organized by Tina Ingram, South health services coordinator. Each class had over 20 students in it, and Ingram said she was impressed with the attendance and De Hoyos’ enthusiasm and passion.
“Everyone had excellent remarks,” she said. “Overall, I am very pleased with how it turned out.”
