NW Campus has published El lago artístico, TCC’s first literary magazine written completely in Spanish.
Free copies are available in the Spanish department office or from Alejandro Garza, NW assistant Spanish professor and faculty adviser for the publication.
The idea for an all-Spanish publication came when some students published pieces in Spanish in the campus’ other literary journal Marine Creek Reflections, Garza said. he worked with the faculty members involved with Marine Creek Reflections and started spreading word among his classes about the Spanish magazine.
Most of the submissions came from Garza’s students, but others who weren’t his students heard about it and asked to be included, he said.
“One student wrote about immigrating to the U.S.,” Garza said. “So it’s real-life stuff. Students wrote about loved ones, nature, the topics all vary.”
Most of the submissions are poetry, but there are also children’s stories, short stories and one photograph. A total of 28 students submitted work, but some students submitted more than one piece.
Though the first edition is published, Garza is accepting pieces to be included next year.
For the next issue, a student interested in Spanish journalism is planning to submit news articles about happenings on campus to the magazine.
