Soul Surfer, based on the true story of professional surfer Bethany Hamilton and the shark attack that left her without one arm, will leave viewers with a little more inspiration and an uplifting outlook on life.
The story of Hamilton shows that no matter what life throws at a person, he or she can get through it with faith.
The beginning shows Hamilton (AnnaSophia Robb) surfing the waves and having fun without a care in the world. The viewers really get to connect with who she is as a person.
Hamilton narrates at the beginning of the film telling about her life and passion for the water. Her entire family surfs along with her best friend, Alana Blanchard (Lorraine Nicholson), and Alana’s family too.
Hamilton’s life takes a drastic turn when she encounters a shark while surfing with Alana and Alana’s father Holt (Kevin Sorbo) and brother Byron (Jeremy Sumpter).
Hamilton then faces the biggest challenge of her life — getting back in the water and continuing to do what she loves.
Dennis Quaid, who plays Tom Hamilton, takes the role of her father as a protective man trying to make things work for his entire family. The viewer feels his pain and sorrow watching his child go through the aftermath of the attack. He does this by keeping Hamilton out of the public eye and tries to help her get through life day by day.
Helen Hunt, who plays Cheri Hamilton in the movie, is the caring mother who would do anything to protect her children. Hunt’s honest and natural effortless acting makes her perfect for the role.
Robb does an excellent job playing Hamilton. Her tears and laughter are real. They don’t seem forced.
The viewers can see the pain and frustration through Robb’s acting.
Overall, Soul Surfer is a story of how anyone can overcome any of life’s struggles. People who enjoy hearing about beating the odds will enjoy the uplifting spirits this movie offers.
