A film screening of Tickling Giants will be hosted on NE Campus to bring awareness to fighting oppression with humor April 20.
Tickling Giants is a documentary that tells the story of Bassem Youseff, a heart surgeon who quits his job to become a comedian using political oppression in Egypt as his main topic.
The event will consist of three showings of the film along with panelists discussing forms of oppression and steps individuals can take to make a change in their society.
Andrew Duffield, TCC’s director of institutional diversity, said he hopes to discuss ways to exercise the right of free speech and dialogue.
“We can help people find their own creative, nonviolent ways to be heard,” he said.
NE speech instructor Amber Meyers plans to discuss the role of journalists in politics as well.
“One viewpoint I’d like to see is the journalist’s role as the ‘fourth branch’ of government,” she said. “In the [film’s] educational guide, there is a section of the timeline of the events in Egypt that speak to the challenges the press faces in reporting inside repressive regimes and the responsibilities we have regarding fake news.”
The screenings will be at 1 p.m., 4 p.m. and 7 p.m. in the Darlage Center Corner (NSTU 1615A). Prior registration is required at TCCTicklingGiants.eventbrite.com.
