Loving oneself first a must for long-lasting relationships

People should learn to fall in love with themselves because loving oneself is the beginning of a long relationship, the SE vice president of continuing education said March 5.

The key to loving life is to love the person one is, Carrie Tunson said during Making A Better You.

She said everyone needs to have self-love, meaning that personal well-being matters to oneself.

“Some of us are our worst enemies, and you cannot run away from self,” she said. “I don’t care what you do. You gotta live with self. So you have to learn how to appreciate self, learn how to appreciate who you are.”

Tunson said everyone who learns how to fall in love with oneself and begins to love oneself can then love someone else.

“Learn how to have a date with yourself,” she said. “And when you find your place, stop trying to be someone you’re not.”

Being the best isn’t always realistic, but being the best they can be at what they are is realistic, Tunson said.

“We don’t like who we are,” she said.

Tunson said people always want to change themselves: their hairstyles, weight or size.

“We get all off course about what we are about,” she said. “But if you don’t do anything else this afternoon, I want you to say to yourself, ‘I’m big, I’m skinny, I’m vanilla, I’m chocolate, I’m black walnut — but I am beautiful!’”

Natalie Johnson, South Tex-Prep director and mathematics associate professor, said she bought some of her students tickets to the luncheon because she believes Tunson is a good speaker who can make an impact.
