Letter to the Editor

Dear Editor of The Collegian,

I acknowledge and appreciate how students with disabilities at the NW and TR campuses are being helped to become more independent by being given jobs at the campus by the TR Campus health services office, part of the Stepping Stones program that helps students with disabilities become more independent. (Taylor Jensen, “Students with disabilities get skills, work in NW program,” March 7) One of which is Heather Soto, who works as an assistant at the TR Campus.

My main concern is that these students are not getting paid for the work they are doing at the campus. It should not be seen as just helping, but also working. How different are they from other students who work at the campus?

The campuses are benefiting more from the free help they are getting from these students, which is unfair. At least some deductions should be made from their college fees.

Therefore, students with disabilities should get paid for whatever job they do, whether on campus or elsewhere.

Yours faithfully,

Anesu Mugwagwa
