NW volleyball title won by Lobos

By Heather Bench/reporter

Five teams battled it out in the NW volleyball tournament last week, but Lobos emerged the winner.

In this double elimination tournament, teams play to 15 points in the best two out of three games. Lobos beat Coalition in the final game to win the title.

On the first day, no teams were eliminated, but three teams were already halfway there with one loss.

The second day of the tournament, teams Set it & Quit it and Turbo both lost their second games and were eliminated. Lobos remained undefeated.

Only three teams were left on the last day of the tournament, and teams L-Dub and Coalition couldn’t afford another loss. Coalition beat L-Dub without a fight, and L-Dub was eliminated.

Calvin Hall, an L-Dub player, offered an explanation for his team’s poor showing.

“We’re a bunch of basketball players,” he said. “That’s why we lost.”

But he believed his team was good. “I got a lot of blocks,” he said.

Maurice Mayfield, L-Dub’s team captain said, “We do it just for fun.”

Mayfield added that he and his teammates are better at basketball.

The undefeated Lobos played against Coalition for the championship. Coalition beat Lobos in the first match to leave both teams with one loss each. The teams played again in a winner-take-all match, and this time Lobos left the game as champions.

With the exception of one player, Lobos players are all in the volleyball class on NW Campus.

“I knew we would win,” said Lobos player Amanda Gross. “We already have the chemistry.”
