The TCC Select basketball team compiled a record of 4-1 in the Texas Regional NIRSA Intramural Basketball Tournament last month.
The team, comprised of Montrell Donnell, Casey Forge, Chauncey Lusk, David Lyons, Richard Phillips, Steve Ware, Antoine Nichols, Joel Holmes, Cameron Arispe, Andrew Singleton, and Myron Whitaker finished 3rd in a field of 50, winning it’s pool in pool play, and advancing to within one game of the championship finals.
The tournament, held March 28-30, crowned a regional champion to send to the national tournament in Columbus, Ohio.
The team was coached by Mike Daniels, South Campus Intramural Director, and Bill Nix, South HPE instructional assistant.
In their first game, they defeated a team from Angelo State by the score of 38-31. They went on to defeat a team from Texas A&M 52-45, then beat a second team from Angelo State 38-23. In their fourth game, they beat a team from North Texas 46-45 before losing to a team from Texas-San Antonio in a regional semi-final.
“Being this was TCC first year in the NIRSA Tournament, the pre-selected Intramural Basketball Team did exceptionally well by winning its pool play bracket and going on the defeat several division one college teams,” Daniels said.
Coach Daniels would like to thank all twelve students for their participation, as well as those few fans that came out and showed their support for these young men, as well as the school, during the tournament.
