Author to speak on integration

The author of Sons of Mississippi, sponsored by student activities and history department, will visit NE Campus Thursday, April 12.

Dr. Paul Hendrickson, a former prize-winning feature writer for The Washington Post, will reflect on race and its legacy in America. He will speak on the era surrounding his book and explain how “every
Mississippi story sooner or later touches this one,” he said.

The story takes place just before the 1962 riots against the integration of the University of Mississippi at Oxford. His book profiles the seven sheriffs pictured on the book’s cover and their lives in a time when racism was at its peak.

Hendrickson has been awarded many honors including being named a Guggenheim Foundation Fellow for his work on Sons of Mississippi, along with other recognitions and awards.

He currently teaches nonfiction writing at the University of Pennsylvania, where he lives with his wife and two sons.

The speech is free and will be in the NSTU Center Corner on NE Campus at 12:30 p.m.
