South Campus offers parent advice series

Juggling work, family and school can seem like a huge task to take on without a support system.

South Campus wants to help parents gain support and information with a nine-class series called Families First – Free Parenting Classes in Spanish and English sponsored by Catholic Charities.

The series will begin 9-11 a.m. Sept. 3 in SSTU on South Campus and continues every Wednesday.

Catholic Charities program manager Patricia McGrew said classes are limited to 12-14 families to attend either the English or Spanish classes.
However, if more want to attend, she said a second class will be opened.

“The first week will be registration,” she said. “Each class will be a different topic, though.”

One week could be communication and expectations while another will be about child development, McGrew said.

“We will have an early childhood therapist come in one week to discuss recurring themes and also subjects like ADD and ADHD,” she said.

The five facilitators of the classes want to bring an interactive and engaging dynamic to each class, McGrew said.

“We want parents to know when to ask questions and the best people to ask them to,” she said.

Adults will be on site for babysitting if families bring their children to the class, McGrew said.

Yolanda Sifuentes, special projects coordinator for the Family Empowerment Center, said they will offer Spanish and English classes simultaneously in the SSTU.

“The classes are for students and also people in the community to attend,” she said.

If a person cannot attend the fall session, Catholic Charities will also offer two sessions in spring, Sifuentes said.
