An upcoming SE Halloween-themed dance workshop hopes to give students a chance to blow off steam by doing their best Michael Jackson impression.
The SE Campus health and physical education department will host the workshop 1:30-3:30 p.m. Oct. 30 in the ECHS cafeteria. Dance participants must be early college high school students with limited space for other attendees because of room size.
Early college high school students will work alongside the dance department’s Rhapsody dance group and practice choreography from Jackson’s Thriller music video and other Halloween-themed dances and then perform for family and friends. SE Campus kinesiology instructor
Shahzad Nazir said he realizes students’ expectations can be stressful and that those stresses are doubled for early college high school students.
“These students are expected to get high school diplomas and their associate degrees,” he said. “It can be very overwhelming.”
With that in mind, Nazir said he hopes the upcoming dance workshop will be an outlet for the early college high school students who otherwise don’t have many opportunities to get involved in extracurricular activities or interact with more traditional college students.
“I wanted them to feel that they belong to the college,” he said. “And at some point, you’ve got to let these kids have some fun.”
Nazir said he hopes he can make an annual tradition out of the workshop.
“This is a trial run for us,” he said. “And we want to have costumes and make-up next year and make it even bigger and better.”
