NW Cornerstone Honors Society will sponsor a visiting researcher Oct. 13 for Crisis Communication: An Introduction to Organizational Image Restoration.

J.J. McIntyre, a communication associate professor at the University of Central Arkansas, will discuss his research and career experiences 12:30-2 p.m. in the Walsh Library on NW.

“[My presentation] will be an introduction to crisis communication with emphases in the nature of crises and dispelling some commonly held myths about crisis communication,” he said.

This will be the second time McIntyre has spoken to TCC students and faculty.

Last year’s presentation on crisis communication drew nearly 100 students. Afterward, he answered questions on a range of communication topics and personally spoke to many students about their interests and career goals.

This year’s presentation will “give students an idea of what sorts of things they could study or do if they were to get a degree in communication and to see how impactful good communication can be in a workplace, organization or government,” said Zachary Frolich, program organizer and Cornerstone Honors speech instructor.

McIntyre has worked on grants for government agencies such as the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention and the U.S. Department of Agriculture.

In addition, he also works as a crisis communication consultant for businesses and state agencies.

His research interests include chaos theory, the role of radio in a crisis and school shootings and organizational learning.

“In today’s world, businesses and other types of organizations cannot afford to ignore crisis planning or hope to recover from a crisis without a strong communication response,” McIntyre said.
