Students find cheap ideas for dating

By Leah Bosworth/ne news editor

Last year, NW Campus student Diana Lopez was sent on a search by her boyfriend for a Valentine’s Day surprise with hidden “puzzle notes.”

“We called it that because they are notes that put a puzzle together,” she said. “You have to follow directions to complete the task.”

He placed the first note in her purse, so she noticed it when she got her wallet out. It told her to go to her room and open her desk drawer. She found a candy Kiss attached to another note telling her to grab her keys and get in her car.

Lopez said she found a third note inside her car that told her to drive to her boyfriend’s house. On his porch, she found a rose and a card.

“I opened the card, and it was a poem for me. Then he stepped out, and that was the end of it,” she said. “It was a cute and simple surprise, and then we had dinner.”

Puzzle notes are just one affordable way to celebrate Valentine’s Day.

TR student Adam Herb said he surprised his Valentine with a picnic in the Fort Worth Botanical Gardens a few years ago.

“It was one of the more memorable dates I’ve had,” he said.

Herb said he packed blankets and a camera, and ordered takeout from Boston Market before picking up his date.

“She was just along for the ride, and she enjoyed it,” he said.

They set up their picnic in the Rose Garden, where Herb said they enjoyed the cool afternoon looking at the flowers and sitting next to each other.

The gardens are free and provide different areas for sitting down to a picnic.

“I would do it again,” he said.

Valentine’s Day is not only for people with a significant other.

NW student Alma Ramirez said she would definitely plan a buddy date.

“A buddy date can be with anyone,” she said. “If you go with someone of the opposite sex, it’s fun because you can be flirty and dress sexy if you want. If you go with someone of the same sex, it’s fun to watch other couples while you’re out.”

She said a buddy date could be more relaxed and have less pressure than a formal Valentine’s Day date.

“It doesn’t matter who you go with as long as you’re having fun,” she said.
