Time management is the bigzgest challenge reported by college students, a speaker told NW students on Sept. 11.
Lily Calzada, NW Campus coordinator of special services and advising and counseling, emphasized the importance of planning and prioritizing in school during her seminar on time management.
“Manage your time well or time will manage you,” she said. “This is critical when you’re in school.”
Calzada presented techniques to aid in the process of time management such as backdating assignments, avoiding assignment amnesia and making lists.
“You don’t want to underestimate the amount of time needed for coursework,” she told students. “Typically, you need six to nine hours of studying for a three-hour class a week.”
Being conscious of one’s body energy levels throughout the day is just as important, Calzada said.
“If you’re a night person, don’t try to get up at 5 in the morning to study for an exam,” she said.
NW sophomore Selah Medlin said she plans on backdating her assignments in the future instead of procrastinating until the day before they are due.
“If I break [the assignment] into manageable portions, I’ll be able to go back and edit because I allotted myself the extra time,” she said. “I didn’t think about doing that. It will really take a load off.”
NW freshman Sonia Remo now realizes the importance of prioritizing her tasks.
“I’m going to organize my goals and find out what needs to be done and what doesn’t need to be done,” she said. “I think that’s a real problem — realizing what is most important.”
The seminar was part of NW Campus’ Student Success Conference.
