NE counselor shares her advice about major dilemmas

To understand their desires for the future, a NE counselor told students recently to ask themselves three questions: Who am I? Where have I been? Where am I going?

Lilian Mabry presented Tips on Choosing a Major March 30 as part of the Student Success series sponsored by student development services.

“I believe in interaction,” she said as she had participants interact with each other and added humor to her PowerPoint presentation.

All students change their majors at least two times during their college careers, so it’s not a big deal, Mabry said.

“A big deal is to find out what you are really passionate and good at,” she said.

Participants took self-assessment tests to help them understand what they really like doing and where they excel.

“Sometimes what you want to do won’t be what you thought it was,” she said. “So it’s always good to brainstorm, take advice and think a lot before you actually start anything.”

Mary Huninge, one of the participants, said the self-assessment test was beneficial, and she can now tell what she likes.

“This kind of seminar is really helpful for students like me who have no clue on what to choose as a major,” she said.

The one-hour presentation is given every semester. If students missed this session, they can visit the counseling center for advice. To make appointments for free counseling on NE Campus, students can call 817-515-6661.
