As students prepare for the upcoming hiring fair Oct. 25 on South Campus, the career and transfer center presented Walk Through — Make a Good First Impression — Curb Appeal — Dress for Success Oct. 18.
Center coordinator Monica Miranda conducted the session covering résumés, interviews and professional attire.
“As you are preparing for the hiring fair, study and memorize your résumé and don’t be afraid to give examples of your academic successes,” she said.
Miranda encouraged the students to use their academic history to reflect their strengths — strengths that will fill the gaps in their minimal work history.
During the session, students did role playing and answered sample interview questions where Miranda said interviewees frequently stumble.
“When asked to describe your weaknesses, always add a positive viewpoint on the end,” she said.
She then gave an example of not being able to say no to people.
“I have an issue with telling someone no, but instead of turning someone down or making a commitment, I express that I will consider their request, will evaluate the time I have available and will get back to them in a timely manner,” she said. “Doing so, you are not rejecting the person who confronted you, but you are allowing yourself time to make a decision without haste.”
One audience member described her own interview style of dress as simple, yet professional.
Miranda elaborated, suggesting that interviewees’ attire should be conservative and should “not follow fashion trends.” She said students should keep hair out of their faces and refrain from wearing distracting bangles, rings, brooches and other “flashy” jewelry.
Young men should limit facial hair, Miranda said.
First impressions are important for college students and young adults seeking employment, Miranda said.
Dressing for success at a job fair is “curb appeal,” she said, and it is part of a walk-through when meeting with possible employers.
About 40 employers will participate in the Holiday Hiring Fair 11 a.m.-2 p.m. in the SSTU Cafeteria. The fair is open to all students and the public.
Miranda suggested students take multiple copies of their résumés and dress appropriately.
