Spring enrollment sets record

TCC enrollment for has seen a record increase this spring semester.

As of Jan. 22, the district headcount was 45,613 students, a 16 percent increase over last spring. Billy Roessler, district records and reports director, said historically a lower economy will bring in more college students.

Roessler said the reason for the increase this semester was the addition of Trinity River Campus and more sections added to distance learning.

“Trinity River by itself enrolled 5,000 students,” he said. “We opened more classrooms, hired more faculty and created more openings for students.”

Roessler also credited flexible scheduling such as the Weekend College offered on TR and NE campuses and lower tuition than four-year colleges.

“We have a quality product at a low price,” he said.

The final census date is Feb. 4, but Roessler said even that number will not be accurate. Classes starting in March and Weekend College will have different registration numbers. An accurate headcount will not be made until the end of the semester, he said.
