Music snobbery needs to fade out

Hey music snobs, listen up.

The majority of the earth’s population enjoys listening to music. Whether it be classical, country, Hindu, blues, folk, oldies, hip-hop, alternative, opera or, yes, music that plays on the radio, people all around the globe have different tastes.

Dentonites especially have a certain hatred for those of us who like music just because we enjoy listening to it, not because we like to name drop.

University of North Texas students, we get it — you are much more artistic and knowledgeable than the rest of us Dallas/Fort Worth residents, but we do not want to sit around at a party and listen to how many band names you can list. Whether you are discussing how bad a band is, or how wonderful, you guys can’t help but go on and on.

Also, we understand you think bands that make a lot of money are sell-outs, but isn’t that why so many students at UNT are getting music degrees? So they can make money in music?

You guys are just as bad as Austinites. Wait, I take that back. You guys are worse. Nothing is worse than a wannabe. And, man, do you guys wanna be Austin. However, I can’t really blame you — Austin is a pretty awesome place.

I don’t want to lay all the blame on UNT students, though. Quite a few music snobs are found around the TCC district.

Is it worse to like a band that plays on the radio or like one because it doesn’t?

A pretentious music listener will tell you it’s worse to like one that plays on the radio because the group is no longer underground. This is a tad ridiculous.

I’m not going to lie. I started to dislike Kings of Leon as soon as I heard a song of theirs on the radio. Not because it was on the radio, but because it absolutely sucked.

The band almost changed its whole sound for air time. Those are the things to worry about. Not that it is suddenly “mainstream.”

By the way, have you guys heard of this band called Local Natives? It is really rockin’. So much that I’m almost certain you haven’t heard of it!
