As temperatures began to cool down, the Frisbees began to fly on NE Campus.
The first intramural Ultimate Frisbee meet of the fall semester kicked off with high interest to grow the sport of Ultimate for TCC students, the players said. Six students and two directing coaches broke off into two teams to match up against each other for two games to seven points.
In the first matchup, Team One, led by Coach Ken Foster, went up by 5-0 in the first 10 minutes of play. Foster was all over the field with most of his time being spent sliding around on the ground and falling over other competitors during play.
However, Team Two did not go away quietly as its players rallied to score four consecutive points. Sam Ashford was the highlight of the team as he used his height to his advantage to get into the opponent’s end zone for three out of the four scores.
But just as Team Two got back into the game, Joshua Scarborough brought Team One together to get the last point of the game to win the first match 7-4.
Coming back from break, the teams broke into different teams of three to have a first-to-seven, winner-take-all final match.
Unlike the first game of Ultimate, the second was a close battle down to the final point.
Each team matched each other’s play early, scoring easily in a much more openly played game.
Jeff Seelinger and Katelyn Stewart were matching each other point for point, scoring three points for each of their respective teams in the second game.
Just as it seemed close, though, Team One took control by the height of Ashford as he jumped his way to the final two points. Team One won the final game 7-4 to take both of the two games played.
“It was a lot of fun to be able to play,” Ashford said. “If you are looking for a fun sport to play with a lot of exercise, this is a perfect one to try out.”
Some players said they play Ultimate Frisbee because it’s a competitive game to play for having fun and meeting friends.
“We are looking to grow with the interest in Ultimate Frisbee Club and hope to have more events in the upcoming weeks,” said Kevin Harper, HPE department chair. “If you have interest in playing, come to the athletic department for more information on upcoming Ultimate meets.”
The two teams featured six TCC students: Ashford, Scarborough, Andrew Detering, Kala Ryan, Stewart and Seelinger.
The next Ultimate meet will be announced soon and posted in the NHPE building, Foster said.
