The first ever indoor soccer league for South Campus kicked off last week with six teams fighting for the top spot.
Karim Zeglam rocketed Team One to its first two wins. He scored four goals in his first game against Team Two on opening day for a 6-2 win.
“We have a good, strong team,” Zeglam said. “We all know each other and have experience with how each other play, and that helps us a lot in a league where most of the teams are just picked by sign-ups.”
In other league play, two teams matched up on day one with Team Three facing Team Four in what proved to be a down-to-the-wire game of quick passing and strong offensive play.
Team Three went up 4-0 early in the first half, but Team Three came back to make it 4-3 at halftime.
In the second half, though, the scoring slowed down with only two goals going into the net for Team Three as it took the match 6-3.
Team Six, which had to forfeit its first game for not having enough players, rebounded for day two but took on the strong Team One who came off a big victory on the first day.
Like the previous day, Team Six rallied after being down 4-0 early to bring the score to 4-3 going into the half. The team had only five players, which proved a weakness against the full six of Team One.
As a result, Team One put its opponents away by taking the match 11-6 in the highest scoring match-up so far in the competition.
The teams were on the court again Tuesday to continue their track to first place in the standings.
“We have had a strong showing for the first ever indoor soccer competition on this campus,” said intramural director Michael Daniels. “We were excited by the interest in trying something new and hope to grow this going forward.”
The winners of the competition will represent the campus in the districtwide intramural soccer finals later in the fall. South Campus currently holds the intramural title after defeating NE Campus in a shootout last year.
The competition takes place each Tuesday and Thursday in October with matches starting at 2:30 p.m. on the South Campus basketball court.
