The works of NE Campus faculty and staff make up an art exhibition displayed until Oct. 30 at the Fort Worth Community Arts Center.
Art associate professor Cindy Hurt assembled the exhibit from pieces by 26 different faculty and staff members. The collection totals 67 diverse works that vary in scale from 3 inches to 7 feet.
“Good art will often push the boundaries. It will make us think outside of the box. It will insult us, make us angry, make us cry, but it will also enlighten us,” Hurt said. “In essence, an exhibition is the ‘footprint’ of where the artist has been.”
The opening reception Oct. 9 included food and live music by Rebecca Scherschell, a NE Campus music instructor who played the harp.
An artist talk is scheduled 2-3:30 p.m. Oct. 24 so faculty and staff can explain their pieces in the exhibit. Attendees will include art instructors Anitra Blayton, Paul Greco, Cindy Hurt, Vicki R. Kluthe, Melba Northrum and Andrew Stalder.
Karmien Bowman, associate professor of art, said she has worked with art for as long as she can remember. She has three sculptures in the exhibit, including an alligator, tiles and two waffles. She said the majority of the work she did for the exhibit was experimental.
“The more I learn, the more I can teach,” she said.
Art associate professor Anitra Blayton also has sculptures in the exhibit. A longtime artist, Blayton currently teaches design, drawing, sculpture and art appreciation classes. She said art is an important way to pay it forward.
“The way I design my art life is to serve the community,” she said. “It’s the best way to give back.”
Because NE Campus does not have a gallery with proper lighting, Hurt said this is the second year the Fort Worth Community Arts Center has housed the exhibition. The exhibition is free and open to the public 9 a.m.-5 p.m. at 1300 Gendy St. in Fort Worth’s museum district.
“It’s going to be a great show,” Bowman said. “Cindy did a great job on the installation of the show.”
