Board games teaching students in SE library

Many games can relate to academic subjects, a public services librarian at SE Campus said.

To illustrate that point, Woody Evans, along with other SE faculty members and staff, have put together Gaming in the Library, an opportunity for students to have fun while learning. The event begins at 2 p.m. Nov. 5 in the library classroom (ESED 1211).

Students can play games such as Chess, Stratego and Mancala, an ancient African counting game, along with other games similar to tic-tac-toe and Connect Four, while also learning how the techniques used to play the games relate to subjects such as math, history and philosophy.

Evans hopes teachers will encourage their students to participate in the event since the main target audience is the students in the classrooms.

“I wanted to do something constructive and somewhat social,” he said. “Hopefully, they’ll learn something and be able to bring it back to the classroom.”

The high-volume traffic in the SE Campus library inspired Evans and other faculty and staff members to arrange the event. Between 2,000 and 2,500 students venture into the SE Campus library a day, he said.

“We’re really interested in getting folks in and doing a fun project,” he said.

Evans will briefly discuss the relationships between certain games and academic subjects, but the majority of the event will allow students time to participate in the games. Students are also invited to bring their own games that might relate to an academic subject.

Refreshments will be provided, and some students can earn extra credit in participating classes via a signed voucher.
