The African American Student Organization’s Hoop It Up has bounced back onto South Campus.

The five-on-five basketball tournament will begin at 10 a.m. Nov. 21 in the SHPE gymnasium.

Admission will be $1 or two canned goods. A portion of the proceeds will go to the American Red Cross to assist with local and national disasters.

Teams will compete for a first-place cash prize and second- and third-place trophies.

Kim Gooden, AASO vice president, wants students to participate.

“If you think you have talent in basketball, this is the event to be in,” she said.

In the past, Hoop It Up has had many participants and even had players that once played overseas.

In 2005, Hoop It Up had 17 teams compete and about 100 viewers in the audience, Gooden said.

Each team of five to seven players, age 16 and up, pays $50 to participate.

Since the tournament is open to the public, participants are not required to be enrolled in classes in the district, but any participant under 16 must have a signed parental consent and indemnity waiver.

The deadline for registration is Nov. 12. For registration information, contact Annie Dobbins at 817-515-4745, Natalie Johnson at 817-515-4340 or Gooden at 817-721-4718.
