TR session stresses against stressing out

“Work smarter, not harder” to accomplish a balanced lifestyle, a Trinity River Campus coordinator told students during the Balancing Multiple Roles workshop Nov. 5.

Margot Garza of the TR center for academic success discussed balancing life when leading multiple roles. Organization is the key tactic to leading a balanced life and not tiring, she said.

Six important life areas require attention — physical, intellectual, social, career, emotional and spiritual, Garza said.

“Be aware of signs of burnout,” she said.

Garza told students to be active and never quit. Having a flexible schedule and open lines of communication among friends, family and work are important to have an active, yet simple life, she said.

Garza said some people cannot handle working full time and going to school full time, and that’s OK.

“Be realistic and prioritize,” she said.

Another important aspect of balancing is making time for the fun stuff in life. Garza said people need to live.

“Don’t forget to enjoy life,” she said.

She also pointed out that exercising is commonly known to reduce stress.

“Remember why you’re doing it,” she said.

Garza said students might find it hard to focus on the goal and the outcome when dealing with the pressures and stress of everyday life. But if people continue to work hard, she said the result will be worth the work.

“Time waits for no one, so don’t quit,” she said.
