Music Through the Centuries will showcase multiple eras of music and show the history, growth and evolution of genres.
The concert begins at 7:30 p.m. Nov. 19 in NE Campus’ Center Corner (NSTU 1615A) and will include students, faculty and guest musicians.
Music from the Middle Ages, renaissance, Baroque, classical, romantic and contemporary eras will be performed.
The concert will feature the duet of “Tonight” from West Side Story, Gregorian chants and pieces from the early Christian period such as “Ubi Caritas” and “Pange Lingua.” “Which is the Properest Day to Sing?” by Thomas Arne will be performed featuring singers Andrew Adame, Matthew Brown, Sarah Collier and Melody Gauntt.
The classical era will have pieces from Mozart such as “The School of Lovers” from Cosi Fan Tutte featuring Jeanene Craig and Karen Ernest singing soprano accompanied by department chair Karen Parsons on piano. Faculty will perform a piece from the contemporary era, “Got A Match” by Chick Corea featuring Tommy Desalve on keyboard, Lou Carfa on bass and Warren Dewey on drums.
Rebecca Ringer will serve as emcee and provide students with program notes with information to describe the music they hear.
“Students often tell me that this concert is the highlight of their Music Appreciation class, for it pulls all together for them,” Parsons said. “For they will hear many instrumental and vocal works from many historical eras performed in chronological order.”
