Although it seems everybody is a critic, few are able to apply critiquing skills to judge themselves.
First Impressions: What You Don’t Know about How Others See You will be presented by Student Success Days Thursday, March 13, on NW Campus to help students with first impressions.
Danelle Ellis, public services librarian, has been presenting this for many years and really enjoys it because of the positive impact it can have on students. The intent of the seminar is not to mold people into an example of a “perfect” first impression. Rather, it is to help students give out the first impression they want.
Still, specific guidelines will be addressed. “If you’re going into a job interview, you might want to take out the tongue ring, but if you’re appearing at a rock concert, put it in,” she said.
Students will get a better understanding of the other side of first impressions, and some tips on how to make a better one.
“Sometimes students simply aren’t aware of how employers judge them,” she said. “Employers are doing things now like checking MySpace pages, and you don’t want anything embarrassing on there that might prevent you from getting the job.”
