International festival will offer culture, dance, fashion, food

The NE Campus International Festival will kick off April 15-16 in Center Corner (NSTU 1615A). The festival is an annual celebration of the many countries that make up the student body.

The event will begin at 9:30 a.m. April 15 with a presentation by English associate professor Edwardo Perez, who will discuss the cultural relevance of Game of Thrones.

Perez has used the series in his English 1302 classes since the fall and said the books are an effective way for students to grasp both the differences and similarities between cultures.

“There’s a lot of culture in the show. Whether it’s the Dothraki, the people in Qarth … I thought it would be something that would be worth discussing,” he said.

Perez plans to use clips from the show, including trailers as visual aids during the lecture.

“I don’t want to give away anything for people who haven’t read the books,” he said. “I hope I can make it coherent and fun at the same time.”

Starting at noon, students will learn about Indian culture in Incredible India: Sights, Sounds and Spice. The presentation will feature a Fabric of Cultures fashion show, Bollywood dancing and international trivia.

A tango class will be offered at 5:30 p.m. as well as a tiramisu cooking class and musical entertainment.

The following day, henna art tutorials begin at 10 a.m. with performances by the NE Jazz and Percussion clubs. There will also be a comedic routine from the French Club mimes.

The festival will end with classical Spanish guitar music from NE music instructor Jan Ryberg and a tango-style line dance with audience participation.
