Table tennis opening for NE players

Students wishing to maintain their good health and get their daily dose of exercise now have a new game available on NE Campus.

Beginning Sept. 21, NE students can participate in table tennis, a faster-paced, more frenetic version of tennis.
Registration is under way, and is due by the date the competition starts.

One of many new games available on NE campus this year, table tennis utilizes one of the HPE Building’s most popular amenities, NE HPE instructor Kevin Harper said.

“ We have several students who use our pingpong tables fairly regularly,” he said. “Because of that, when deciding what events to have for our NEW Games, it was kind of a no-brainer to include table tennis.

“ In the past semesters, it has been one of our most popular games— averaging about 20 participants.”

Like many of the NEW (Northeast Wellness) games, physical fitness is a priority of this activity, Harper said.
“ The wellness benefits of table tennis are primarily stress related,” he said.

“ It is a fun activity that can temporarily get you out of the daily grind of classes and work. It allows you to relax and de-stress for a few minutes. Pingpong is also a fun event that is played with friends and can therefore be beneficial for one’s social wellness,” he said.

Any student looking to take part in this exciting new activity can register in the NE HPE office (NHPE 2111A) until the day of the event.

All participants will meet in the HPE lobby at 12:45 p.m. Sept. 21. The competition will begin at 1 p.m.

All competitors will receive prizes such as key chains and pens, with top finishers getting T-shirts, water bottles and towels.
