NW crowns a champion as tourney ends

We Got Game became NW basketball champions with a 3-1 record earning the right to compete against the champions of the other three campuses in the district intramural basketball championship tournament April 11 in the South Campus gym.

To make the team stronger and more competitive for the championship, the team recently held tournament tryouts for players from the other tournament teams to earn a roster spot creating a type of “all-star team.”

The team will sport a partially new lineup after the mandatory tryouts for eight roster spots.

Returning from the original team are all-stars C.J. Smalls and Terry Dotson, the leading scorers on the team during the tournament. Their outstanding play is the main reason We Got Game finished in first place.

Even with several new players and limited practice time together, We Got Game shooting guard Dotson thinks his team has a great opportunity to win the basketball title.

“Our team is well-balanced,” he said. “We have size and quickness on our team and can match up evenly with the other teams.”

We Got Game has a powerful offense that scores easily and quickly. The team will focus on its defense and the ability to make stops against the other teams. Big man Smalls will be heavily counted on down low to block shots, rebound and be an ominous presence in the paint.

Smalls agrees with Dotson about their team’s chances of winning the championship.

“I’m very excited to meet up with the other teams,” he said.

With a high-scoring offense and tough, scrappy defense, We Got Game believes it is a team that can compete for the title.

“All I have to say to the other campuses is to watch out,” Dotson said. “We are coming.”
