Gym Class Heroes defeated last year’s defending champions Get Money Team 4-1 in SE Campus’ dodgeball tournament Feb. 6.
Playing five rounds, round-robin style, the winners upended Get Money Team, formerly known as Los Aztecas, after a controversial call involving a player holding one dodgeball and catching another at the same time, giving Get Money Team a one-point advantage.
Despite the call, Gym Class Heroes managed to overcome their opponents and win.
“It feels excellent,” Zach Flaherty said. “We took out the defending champions, and it feels good.”
Fellow teammate Ashford Evais said they weren’t even a team to begin with.
“We were all a bunch of randoms coming together from basketball,” he said.

The team gives credit to their coach, Shahzad Nazir, for the win.
“Our coach is the real MVP for this because he’s who brought us together,” Coleman August said.
While Get Money Team was disappointed to lose, they said the loss would be fuel for next time.
“We will use the loss as a lesson for next time to motivate us,” Derill Macalalag said.
Teammate Kevin Van agreed that, while disappointed, the team would be back.
“We worked hard. We’ve been hyped up all year for this. Now we just have to work harder for next time to take our title back,” he said.
Health and physical education instructors Evelyn Parker and Shahzad Nazir organized the tournament.

All participants received T-shirts with second place also getting black drawstring bags and the winners getting larger bags.
