Students can take part in the second round of the Jim Bolen Math Competition Feb. 27 1:30-3 p.m. on their respective campuses.
The first round was held Nov. 7. The second round will be in the same format of an hourlong test. Students can participate in Round II even if they missed Round I.
Last year, $177,600 in scholarships and cash prizes were awarded. The top prize is a full-ride scholarship to Texas Christian University.
Students have been prepping for the competition with study sessions on each campus. Briana Hudson, NE math club president, said the workshops are beneficial.
“So far, the workshops the school offers has helped to get an idea of what the test is like,” she said.
SE math assistant professor Nena Kabranski says that as a whole, students do well in this competition.
“Last year, out of the 11 scholarships offered, five of them went to SE students,” she said.
The test is made up of 20 questions, including problems from algebra, geometry and probability. Students of all math levels can compete.
NE student Cierra Sollecito said she wants to beat her previous score.
“Last year I got 23 points, putting me around fifth place on our campus, which earned me a first-year scholarship for TCC,” she said. “This year I have already gotten 14 points and hope to get at least 10 points on the spring test to beat my previous score.”
