Women learn by hearing, men learn by vision, and that’s why women love to read romantic novels and men watch porn, a government associate professor told NE students last week.
Dr. Lisa Uhlir presented How to Improvise Learning Skills as part of the student success seminars series March 1.
“Learning skills are diverse,” she said. “It can be culture-based, gender-based, ethnicity-based and so on.”
Presenting her fourth speech on learning skills, Uhlir talked about the different kinds of learners and gave tips on how to improve their skills.
There are three different kinds of learners: auditory, visual and kinesthetic. They all have different styles, and they all should imply different learning techniques, Uhlir said.
Visual learners are usually good at spelling, see the bigger picture and say things better, she said.
To improve the skills, they should find a quiet place to study.
“If you are an auditory learner, get your hearing checked often,” she laughed.
Auditory learners read out loud, relate well to time and follow verbal directions. Uhlir said they don’t need to pay attention as much. They can just sit back, hear and learn.
“If you are a kinesthetic learner, you learn more with motion,” she said. “And you should always keep yourself occupied.”
Tom Quesada, a NE student, said the speech helped him to know what kind of learner he is and what he should do to improve.
“She is wonderful and an excellent teacher,” he said.
Uhlir said these kinds of seminars will help students enhance their studying skills in every field. She said she was ready to help the students with anything they need.
Student Phillip Fisher said, “I feel like I fall under every category, and this speech really helped me to know myself.”
