Students prove durability in TR contest

TR Campus hosted its stre ngth and endurance contest in the fitness center March 5 with about 20 contestants.

Contestants did squats, which were worth two or three points per repetition depending on the weight; bench press, worth two or four points per rep; overhand pull-ups, worth two points each for close grip and three points each for wide grip; and pushups, worth one point each.

Contestants actively rooted for the others and encouraged them to push through the pain to get the maximum score possible.

Victor Alva, who won first place in the middleweight class, said he couldn’t just root for himself in a competition like this.

“We’re a team,” he said. “Even if we’re competing, we’ve got to root for each other and cheer him on to do better.”

The big prize of the day was for first place in the heavyweight class.

Manuel Rodriguez won the trophy by posting 110 points. He scored 57 points for squats, 32 for bench press, 19 for pushups and two for pull-ups. He was happy he won the contest and excited for the trophy.

“I’ll put it in my room on my drawer or something, so every morning I can see it,” he said. “It will show me I can do something good in school.”

TR will host another strength contest, likely to be a max weight contest, before the semester is over though the exact date is not set yet.
