Basketball intramural games continued March 12 on NE with the Aztecs defeating the Untouchables 42-40 in the first game.

Tony Luscri of the Aztecs said he wasn’t sure during halftime who would win.

“They looked like they were going to beat us,” he said. “But we hung in there and just caught up to them.”

Luscri’s teammate Amos McCluney said his team played hard to win.

“We had excellent defense,” he said. “We were aggressive today. Our team had no passive playing today.”

Assistant intramural director Ken Foster said the Aztecs’ defense kept them ahead.

“It was a tough game and exciting throughout both halves,” Foster said. “The Aztecs played their zone defense really well, and the Untouchables had a hard time penetrating that.

“They [the Untouchables] had some good plays but not enough to beat the Aztecs’ 2-3 zone defense.”

Cesar Martinez, team captain for the Aztecs, said this was the first time his team played as a unit.

“It was a good game, and it was the first time we did it together,” Martinez said. “I hope they [the Untouchables] don’t get mad or anything. It’s just a game.”

In the second game, the Titans beat the Chupacabras, 49-43.

Jason Davison of the Chupacabras said his team lost because they couldn’t make the easy plays.

“We hustled real hard, and we did what we could,” Davison said. “Not making the easy layups and missing given opportunities kept us from winning.”

Davison’s teammate Ryan Parnell said he thought his team had a chance of winning.

“We were doing great. It was going back and forth, but somehow we let go in the second half,” Parnell said. “We had two guys foul out, and I think that could have made a difference in our game. I hope we do better next week.”

Emily Cain of the Titans said her team wasn’t playing its best.

“We didn’t play at the level we usually play at, but we got into our groove in the second half,” she said. “The Chupacabras impressed us. We thought it would have been an easier game.”

In the last game, the Akron Hammers took on the Wolfpack for a blowout win, 61-20.

Brelan Walker of the Akron Hammers said his team needed to win this week.

“We needed a victory,” Walker said. “It’s been two weeks since we have had one.”

Sheldon Cook of the Wolfpack said he thinks his team could have won if it just played as a unit.

“We played hard and played good,” Cook said. We need to work on our defense and especially our offense.

“We mainly didn’t win because we weren’t in sync. If we were, we probably would have won.”
