Poetry Jam sparks creativity on NE

By Caroline Manausa/reporter

Creative students wanted. Must love pizza and poetry.

The 2013 NE Fall Poetry Jam will be 12:30-2 p.m. Oct. 29 in NSTU Center Corner. It is open to currently enrolled NE students who attend with their teachers or have been offered extra credit for attending.

This year’s interdepartmental Poetry Jam format is a first for the English department. In past Jams, students read their best poetry and winners were determined by popular vote, by selected students or by English faculty.

Debra Frances, English associate professor, said the Jam changes year to year. This year, students will sit eight to a table and create poetry as a group. They do not need prior experience but will have a formula in which to “pour” words. Faculty members will winnow the entries to the three best for the actual competition.

The top three poems will be “interpreted” by speech and drama students, musicians, potters and dancers. Attending students will make the final decision.

“The department does not have much control over the results since the entire event is an extemporaneous extravaganza,” Frances said.

The English department encourages experiences with written language on the creative level as well as on the academic, scholarly level, Francis said.

This Jam will show an interaction between the two as well as the difference, she said.

Each member of the winning group will receive a $20 gift certificate to the campus bookstore.
