Writing contest open to students

By Dylan Bradley/ne news editor

The NE Campus Under the Clock Tower spring student writing competition is accepting written submissions until April 1 and video submissions until May 10.

First-place winners in each category will receive $50 and will be published in Under the Clock Tower in the fall.

The submission categories are short fiction, short nonfiction, poetry and video essay/poem.

The short fiction and short nonfiction categories should be 200-3,000 words, poetry should be two to 60 lines, and video submissions should be four minutes or less.

Judges are open to all topics and forms but favor writing that has imagery or contains sensory detail, English associate professor Rebecca Balcarcel said.

“We have too many stories that start with someone waking up,” she said, “too many poems involving clichés instead of personal experiences.”

A reception will be held in October when the journal is published, and students whose work has been included will be invited to read their work aloud.

Submissions that do not place in the competition may still be published.

For more information or submission, visit http://undertheclocktower.submittable.com or call Balcarcel at 817-586-8046.
